What is coaching?

Sir John Whitmore “Coaching is unlocking a person’s potential to maximise their own performance. It is helping them to learn rather than teaching them.”

My definition is: “A process which involves guided conversations, enabling the coachee to gain clarity, discovery and find answers to their challenges from within.”

What can I expect and what commitment is required?

Coaching is solution and action focused and sessions range from:

  1. A one-off session, completion of a Motivational Map questionnaire, followed by a one-hour de-brief and coaching conversation to develop an action plan.
  2. A package of 6, one and a half hour sessions, at intervals agreed with each coachee (typically monthly)

Sessions can be arranged over video call or face to face.

How does coaching help?

Coachees gain a safe, confidential and non-judgemental space and an opportunity to reflect and work towards their own goals (whatever they might be – this can be goals in life or work).  We work to clarify their goals if they are not clear at the outset.

The coachee can explore any topic, business or personal.  Previous coachees have worked on building their confidence, unblocking limiting beliefs that are holding them back, making significant life changes, changing jobs or careers, returning to work after career breaks, starting their own businesses.

Guided by my questions and a using a variety of coaching tools and models, coachees find their own solutions.  This is important and in itself very empowering for the coachee!

“I feel more at ease having challenging conversations”

I looked forward to each session because I was able to consciously work on myself. This is often a process easily re-prioritised with there here and now. Joy’s level of interest and engagement was well-noted and it’s empowering when somebody sees the value in investing in you.  My confidence in difficult situations has grown and I feel more at ease having challenging conversations with co-workers and suppliers.   This has given me more contentment and enjoyment within the journey and the present day. I was disheartened by the fact that self-improvement is never-ending and felt like being on a hamster wheel. I did not appreciate that it’s a conscious choice and that the journey is as rewarding as the outcome.   I have been pleased with the dynamic of the sessions and the content covered.

What is the first step?

There is an initial no-obligation discovery or “chemistry” conversation to explain more about what coaching is and isn’t, to discuss fees, sessions and to ensure everyone is comfortable with the arrangement.
